hat Is KANA??
The Kodiak Area Native Association was formed in 1966 as a 501 (C)(3) non-profit corporation providing health and social services for the Alaska Natives of the Koniag region. The Kodiak AreaNative Association (KANA) service area includes the City of Kodiak and six remote Alaska Native villages. The six remote villages include: Akhiok, Karluk, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, Port Lions, and Larsen Bay.
Historically, nonprofit corporations, such as KANA were formed throughout Alaska after the AlaskaNative Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) was enacted. The ANCSA settlement is an agreement between the United States Government and the Alaska Native Tribes. The ANCSA legislation distributed land to regional and village entities to establish for-profit corporations. Each of the regional profit corporations formed a separate non-profit corporation to assist their members with health and social service needs.
Initially established in 1973 as the non-profit arm of the Bering Straits Native Association, Kawerak advocated for the settlement of the Alaska Native Land Claims Act. Today, Kawerak contracts with the state and federal government to provide services to residents of the Bering Strait Region, 75% of whom are American Indian, Eskimo or Aleut descent. Kawerak's organizational goal is to empower Alaska Native people and their governing bodies to take control of their future. With programs ranging from education to housing, and natural resource management to economic development, Kawerak seeks to improve the Region's social, economic, educational, cultural and political conditions.
Our purpose is to represent our tribes and communities by being united, responsible, sober leaders by protecting a healthy environment which provides good health, spiritual and mental wellness, and to provide education, employment, training and to have cultural heritage education.
To promote, protect and provide sovereignty, hunting, fishing and all other Indian Rights through representation of Native people and positive role models utilizing the wisdom of the elders and our traditional chiefs to lead the Native people to unity.
Chugachmiut is the Tribal consortium created to promote self-determination to the seven Native communities of the Chugach Region. We provide health and social services, education and training, and technical assistance to the Chugach Native people in a way which is acceptable to Native cultural values and tradition in order to enhance the well-being of our people by continuing to strengthen the tribes and increase self-determination opportunities for community operated tribal programs.
