    A union with nearly 2 million government and private-sector members wants the U.S. Department of Labor to investigate how a $450 million contract awarded to an Alaska Native company is being handled.

    The Service Employees International Union says at least 17 private security guards employed by Alutiiq, a subsidiary of Kodiak-based Afognak Native Corp., plan to file claims with the Labor Department saying they were shortchanged on pay.

    Alutiiq says the union is misinformed and is engaged in a smear campaign with the goal of increasing its membership.

    "It's unfortunate that we're being pulled into the middle of it," Dusty Kaser, Alutiiq's chief executive, said Monday.
